Proof of Funds

Please note that Government of Canada does not provide financial support to the new skilled worker immigrants.

You must have enough money to support yourself and your dependent after you arrive in Canada. You cannot borrow this money from another person. It is mandatory to be able to provide proof of funds and use this to support your family.

Proof of funds is required when you submit your applications for immigration.

The amount of money that you need to have to support your family is determined by the size of your family as can be seen from the table below.

Number of Family Members Funds Required (in Canadian dollars)
1 $9,186
2 $11,482
3 $14,280
4 $17,286
5 $19,323
6 $21,360
7 $23,397
Table 1 - Required Funds

How Much Funds Should you Bring?

In order to plan for this, find out how much it will cost to live where you are planning to stay and settle in Canada.

Bring as much money as possible to make moving and finding a home in Canada easier.

These funds are NOT a 'Sina qua non' condition of admission. The six-month settlement fund requirement is a policy creation implemented by the Department and is not found in the Regulations.

It has been instructed to Visa officers not to refuse applicants on the basis of not being able to provide the required proof of funds alone as specified in the Table above. The following criterias are to be considered:

spouse's potential for employment
genuine offers of employment
genuine offers of accommodation
general assistance from family and friends
transferable skills of applicant

The applications of proof of funds and the criterias above are vary from post to post in accordance wi th the particular circumstances of an applicant's case.

Moreover, certain visa officers adhere to a practice of requesting longevity of fund possession for up to one year, while other officers will issue visas upon t he production of proffs of current deposits or bank drafts in the name of applicant, spouse or over-age dependent child.

In the case when applicants cannot provide proof funds upon request, he or she can petition the visa office to hold the dispositon of the case in abeyance for a reasonable period of time, pending efforts by the applicant to comply with this statutory requirement.
