Canadian Immigration Law defines 'Permanent Residents' are individuals who in tend on residing in Canada on a permanent basis.
Rights and Obligations
People who obtained Canadian permanent residence status have the rights to live, work, and study in Canada. Permanent Residents are entitled to most social benefits. However, there are also obligations that need to be done: paying taxes, obeying laws, etc. If you or your dependent commits a serious crime in Canada, you or your dependent can be deported from Canada.
It is important to remember that permanent residence status could be lost if you or your dependent abandon Canada as your place of residence. In order to maintain your status, you and your dependent must be physically present in Canada for two years out of five years.
