About Canada : Living in Canada

It was on July 1, 1867 that Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia formed a confederation. An Act that has been known as The British North America Act (BNA) officially declared Canada a country. Canada's national day known as Canada Day is celebrated every year on July 1. In 1965, the red and white flag with the maple leaf at the middle was adopted as an official flag.

Canada is the second largest country in the world with the total landmass of approximately 10 million square kilometers. Population is approximated at 30 million people. There are three oceans border Canada: the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic. Due to its large size, Canada is made up of many different geographical regions: the Atlantic Region, Central Canada, the Prairie, the West Coat, and the North. There are 10 provinces and three territories in Canada with each has its own capital city. Canada's capital city is in Ottawa, Ontario.

Canada is one of the developed countries that are joined in G-7 Nations. This implies that Canada has an excellent working conditions, superb education curriculum, high standard of living, and a health care system that has been ranked as one of the best in the world.

Canada is a country populated largely by immigrants from all over the world. Every year, Canada welcomes thousand of immigrants into Canada. This diversified background of people has made Canada unique. Multiculturalism has been promoted by Canadian government in order to maintain this diversification of cultures.

Once you became a permanent resident, you have the rights to live, work, and study in Canada. This is protected by Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. If you wish to become a Canadian citizen, you can do so after you have lived for three years in Canada. This will enable you to apply for a Canadian passport and eligible to vote in government election.
